Kevin Zeese, spokesperson for Ralph Nader's 2004 presidential campaign and director of Democracy Rising, related to The Hill, "Boom! It just became an incredibly important landmark for the community. C-SPAN, NBC News and ABC's " Good Morning America" all filmed segments inside the restaurant within the restaurant's first few months. Shallal had said he would keep Busboys running even if just broke even, but it proved a success from the beginning, even without committing an advertising budget. It features the words of Langston Hughes, "Let America be America again / Let it be the dream it used to be." Reception The collage depicts civil rights icons including the Rev. He refuses to sign the mural, saying this would be a "final gesture" that would preclude him from making revisions later. Shallal painted the giant civil rights movement-themed mural covering one wall of the restaurant, titled Peace in Struggle Wall. Rejected ideas for the restaurant's name include Writers Block Cafe, Broken Bread Cafe and White Rabbit Cafe, the latter inspired by The Matrix. The name refers to American poet Langston Hughes, who worked as a busboy at the Wardman Park Hotel in the 1930s, prior to gaining recognition as a poet. Shallal obtained a loan from black-owned Industrial Bank, located at 11th and U streets. Concerned that his creation of a trendy artistic space would clash with U Street's traditional identity, Shallal reached out for support from community leaders, neighborhood groups, church organizations, schools and radio stations prior to opening the location. The first Busboys and Poets lies two blocks from U Street, a commercial corridor in Northwest Washington, known as "Black Broadway" in its heyday. It has an Oreo cookie crust and topper.Locations in the Washington, DC metropolitan area It was still good (I ate it all) and if you like yours lighter you’ll love it. I prefer really dense heavy cheesecakes and this one was fluffy.

BUSBOY AND POETS RESERVATIONS PLUS
Plus it’s served with guacamole and vegan sour cream. I had the Vegan Quesadilla for my main dish, and while it is listed in the appetizer section is was plenty hearty for a meal. The Harira is a two bean Moroccan soup that reminded me of a richer, creamier minestrone. It has the same coconut coating as you see on coconut shrimp but around tofu! The sauce with it was excellent as well. I wasn’t disappointed! The Coconut Tofu appetizer was my favorite thing we ordered and shared as a group. I recently went back for dinner on a Saturday night. This restaurant is an excellent choice for breakfast, lunch or dinner. I truly enjoyed my lunch and would love to get every vegan item on the menu (17 in all!). The “tuna” salad was made out of chickpeas as well as relish, carrot, nori, celery, and vegan mayo. The hemp dressing was original and delightful and I ate every bite of the salad. The Vegan Cobb salad consisted of arugula, tofu, tempeh, cashews, tomatoes and avocado. It was creamy and had the right touch of spice.įor food I ordered two things: the Vegan Cobb salad with a hemp vinaigrette and a side of vegan “tuna” salad. I love chai lattes and want to support places that offer alternative milks to dairy. I started with a chai latte with almond milk. Plus I love leftovers so why not? The vegan items are clearly marked which helped me narrow down my choices and I loved not having to ask the server a lot of questions about ingredients. I ordered more than I knew I could eat because I just had to try more than one thing. Seriously, there is so much to choose from. I enjoyed looking at the artwork on the walls and my son enjoyed climbing on the couches and looking out the large windows. I highly recommend doing that as this is a busy place! Plus we were there near a holiday. We made reservations so we did not have to wait for a table. We met some friends for lunch, so we had a party of 8. I can’t comment much on if they’ve achieved this particular goal, but I loved the comfortable atmosphere of the Shirlington location and loved the food even more. This is a restaurant that wants to create “a space for art, culture and politics to intentionally collide”. Busboys and Poets has six locations in the Washington, DC area including Maryland and Arlington, VA.
